The Value of Mental Health Awareness Training for Coaches

New study

Many coaches encounter athletes or staff members with mental health concerns, making it essential to recognize and refer them to appropriate support resources. By being aware of and able to identify mental health issues, coaches can foster an inclusive and supportive environment that helps everyone perform at their best. This article explores the experiences of participants in U.S. Soccer’s Coaching License Courses, focusing on how often they have dealt with mental health challenges among athletes or staff, as well as their exposure to, interest in, and perceived value of mental health awareness training. The observational, cross-sectional study surveyed participants after a free mental health awareness presentation. The findings revealed: (a) 82.19% of participants had supported athletes or staff facing mental health challenges; (b) 56.65% had no prior training in recognizing or managing mental health issues; (c) 60.16% primarily worked with youth athletes; and (d) 98.71% believed mental health training was valuable for their role as a coach or administrator. In conclusion, there is a strong desire for more mental health awareness training among soccer coaches and administrators. Given the high prevalence of individuals dealing with mental health challenges, it is crucial to prioritize training and ensure access to mental health resources. Incorporating this training into all levels of coaching licensure should be a priority to fully support athletes and staff both on and off the field.

Practical applications

Coaches play a crucial role in recognizing and referring athletes to appropriate mental health resources, which can significantly impact their long-term well-being. Creating a stigma-free, supportive environment allows athletes to feel comfortable seeking help and fosters a positive team culture. Mental health education should extend beyond coaches and administrators to include athletes, parents, and team staff to further reduce stigma and encourage help-seeking behaviors.

It is important that sport leagues, governing bodies, and federations take the lead in prioritizing mental health and athlete safety. Initiatives like the U.S. Soccer Federation’s free mental health awareness course can promote healthy playing environments and have lasting positive effects on participants. Incorporating mental health training into all coaching license levels is essential to ensure athletes and staff are supported both on and off the field.
